Have a cheerful & warm weekend!

I'm baking some spiced applesauce cake with cream cheese frosting for tonight's CMF York Open House! We're planning on having a lovely bonfire tonight!

The leaves in York have become so pretty--- it's been fluctuating between grey and dreary; mild and bright; and cold and blustery! But I love it!

Otherwise, I've been enjoying my HIV: Therapy & Practice SSC. Clinics have been interesting, although there is a lot of down time. But it has been nice to discuss a lot more about the research and the medications!

But I've been feeling really frustrated the past few days--- something's happened with my paperwork to re-apply to take the Step 1s (again! The second time for this application; and I think probably a total of seven times, with five misses!). I've had a really tough time coping with frustration and anger in the past few months--- I thought that I was quite good at handling stuff like that, but then yesterday I ended up on sobbing the phone to my Momma. I guess I reached a breaking point---

On the other hand, I went to a preview of Burke and Hare, which is based on a true story in the early 19th century, Edinburgh! (see the trailer below!)

It was really interesting to think that the serial murders were in the name of medicine! If those kind of things didn't take place, there would have taken a lot longer of a time to get advancements in anatomy!

On the other hand, those cases also bring up a lot of ethical issues--- patient autonomy, informed consent, beneficence, and non-maleficence. I think there is a lot to be said in research ethics which is a totally different field today than it was back in the day of Burke & Hare!

Time to frost some cake! What are you doing this weekend?

Monday!

Good Monday morning to everyone!

I'm on a three week SSC (Student Selected Component) module at the moment, and the topic is HIV Treatment: Theory & Practice. So I'm at the GUM clinic most days! It should be really interesting! HIV/AIDS was a topic that I knew a bit more about during my Masters, when we talked a lot about confidentiality issues and research ethics, but I'll be very glad to take it from this side.

The weekend was very wonderful too--- I went to see the social network with Sophie on Friday, had a nice visit from Suleika on Saturday, had a lovely jaunt into town with Anita and the now-one-year-old-and-very-clever-and-very-cheeky-indeed-Elliot, and a great evening with Carmen (Michael Buble on the X-factor! hOo-rah!).

And how are you???

Oh, here are some links for the start of your week!
RIFLE blog does a Monday eye candy post every week--- to provide a bit of inspiration!

I've always liked the idea of how people used to commission artwork---- here's your chance with The Commission Project! Brilliant idea!

Pink pearl buttons on brown boots?? I wish these were mine!

A bunch of drunken blokes getting together on an English beach to do "Olympic"-like events--- hilarious!

What gorgeous photos of what looks like a very fun autumnal family outing! Pumpkins? Yes please!

Paediatrics.

I cannot believe that it eight weeks in paediatrics is already finished! It just zoomed by! I really enjoyed the block--- as we told the med school on our evaluations, we think that it was some of the best teaching we've had since entering the clinical years! It was so nice to have such enthusiasm and earnestness in teaching us and giving us some clinical experience!

My emotions kind of went through a lot this block. It's TOUGH to see really sick kids. I think there was also a distinct difference in seeing them as an ethicist and now as a medical student. When I had my ethicist's hat on, I always focused on the 'best interest' thing--- but it was a bit theoretical. As a medical student, I felt a little bit more invested, even though it was for the same cause: 'best interest.' I felt pretty bewildered a lot of the time---

One of the most difficult cases was a little girl with a rare progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It was a really tough consultation, and I came home and sobbed for a good-long-while as I grieved for the child and family. But I also felt a sense of relief because I knew that the job requires for me to keep my emotions and my work separate. If ‘professionalism’ dictated that I should keep any large display of emotions in check, I was happy to do it…. And yet I also felt that it was doing some disservice to the patient. As though I should have some proof of the intangible but acute differences her history made to me. Also, I felt ashamed that my reaction seemed so overt, although I had no hand in the management of the child nor any relation to the child. Afterall, it was unlikely that I would ever see the patient again after she was discharged. In fact, it is unlikely that I would ever see a patient with the same disease again. In the end, I think that it helped to remember that patients are humans and deserve our respect and our compassion, that doctors are also humans and are allowed to be emotional and sensitive, and that medicine is about more than the science...

Now that it's the end, I think I can say---
*Babies smell fantastic--- I think the mix between breast milk, warmth, baby talc, and vomit is just magical.

*Changing diapers is easier than getting the babies undressed. Seriously. I mean, layering is really fashionable and current and all, but those buttony/poppy onesies can be overwhelming when there are trousers and shirt (and sometimes cardi!) involved

These wee gents are decked out in clothes by LuckyBoySunday, a Danish company! So cute! (via Bliss-- and see some more Bliss-ful photos of playful kids here!)

*Kids are smarter than we give them credit for--- and some can recite long stanzas of poetry! (One of the little kids on the ward 'read' me Beatrix Potter, but it was in fact, memorization!).

*Those tiny-ass chairs meant for the kids are surprisingly comfortable--- and it is very amusing to see the really larger-built docs sitting on them!

*Kids know who to trust... And if you look rough in the morning, it's tough to be convincingly trustworthy.

*Kids have cooler toys nowadays, but the coolest ones are the ones that would rather play with the box than the toy!

*Kids might not always understand what you say, but sometimes the result is more marvelous... like these little Icelandic hockey players!

*Seeing tweeny-bopper girls with belly-button piercings makes me feel rather grumpy. What the heck? They are still really young!

*It makes me surly to think about the number of teenagers who came in with DKA (diabetic ketoacidosis) because they want to stay skinny and refuse to take their insulin. I know that we should consider it an eating disorder, but I just think that it's another verifiable reason that people think that teenagers are stupid. It also gets me pissed off that media probably has a big hand in this.

*I would be willing to become yet another Asian-American doctor who happens to be a paediatrician... I know, I know... for those of you that haven't heard, most of my Asian-American friends are paediatricians, and it's one of the things that I put in the "con" column because I didn't want to join the crowd... But I think there are more "pros". But we shall see! Who knows if this is what I shall forever do?

*Eight weeks for paediatrics is kind of short. I know that every discipline is robust, but this one was a struggle to fit in!

*RESPECT to my parents--- and ALL parents!--- I am so grateful that they got me and my sibs through all of the various illnesses and things!

Were you ever in the hospital as a kid? How did you like the doctors??

What a busy start to the week! It's only Tuesday, and I'm already spent!

But the weekend was very lovely! The beautiful Becca spent the night after we went out to our lovely Melanie's birthday/leaving do, but I had to kick her out quite early because of our morning drive to Scarborough for the CMF Northern Conference! We learned a lot, met a lot of doctors serving the North, and had a merry time!

Dami & I have got our Bibles out because there were Scripture references scratched into the top of the doorframes and gates! How cool?
CMF HYMS & North Yorkshire REPRESENT!
Okay, I know this one's random---- but we returned from our walk and I discovred these mudheads, all lined up in a row...
{All photos taken by the gorgeous Car, who always has a camera handy, as a good Asian should! ^_~)

And Sunday was nice because I had a visit from more friends with a bit of frantic work at the end! Since then it's just been crazy writing, studying, reading, OSLERing (I passed! woOp!) and now some case presentations with a tasty tea of guacamole full of chopped purple chiles and coriander smushed on top of some bread! mM!

How about some nice links for today?

Let's Save a Life in the next 24 hours!

Hi Y'all!

I thought that we'd start off this weekend by saving a life... I'm working hard on some things that I think will save a few lives later on (more on that in the future...) but today, Stuff Christians Like is going to donate 100% of all donations to Safe World which will be giving free malaria nets to folks in the Nagaseke District, in my homegirl, C's country of Uganda. In addition, you’ll be sent the GPS coordinates of where your exact net goes and be able to Google Earth the location of the person who’s life you saved. How sweet is that??? I know we're all skint, but please do this TODAY, as it's a 24 hour thing!

Read Jon Acuff's post about this here. (Also, it'd be groovy if you looked at the other cool donation rally Jon did to build kindergartens in Vietnam! When SCL readers raised first $30,000 in 18 hours and then $60,000 in sum for the grand total of two kindergartens!) And you can find out more about the charitable organisation Safe World right here....

If you do donate, please let me know how much--- I could only donate ONE at the moment, but I hope that I shall someday be able to go to Africa with a whole load of mosquito nets!

Otherwise, this weekend should be great! A birthday/leaving do for our gorgeous Melanie (who I am insanely jealous of because she's going to do some missions work in Nigeria for the next 8 1/2 months!) and part of our CMF Northern Conference!

Now, I'll leave you with this----

About this Breast Cancer Awareness stuff...

I am ALL for raising Breast Cancer awareness. Really, I am! I know a great many women and some men who have had breast cancer and a great many more who have had family/friends whom have had breast cancer... and I really love the colour pink and I am passionate about ribbons...

What I'm not a big fan of is that these Facebook status shenanigans--- last year it was bra colours and this year it's "I like it... [where you put your handbag the moment you walk in the house]..." Now, it's always fun to be in cahoots over a large community... however, I don't really like the idea of the male population knowing what colour bra I'm wearing---- it probably doesn't help them to keep their thoughts very pure. And I don't really like the masses of "I like it on the table," "I like it on the chair," "I like it in the closet"... I think that the level of innuendo is kind of silly, and I don't really think it's such a great idea! I know that we can fob it off as a little bit of fun, but I would hope that there were much more creative ways to raise awareness and support for breast cancer research than use indiscreet suggestion. What do these Facebook statuses really reflect? How much funding was really increased last year as a direct result of these fads?

How about we all decide to get a bit more informed and consider donating some time/money instead?

I hope that everyone has a really lovely weekend! I'll be doing another day of being an exhibitor (NOT an exhibitionist, as I sleepily introduced myself to a shocked doctor!) at the Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) Conference in beautiful Harrogate!
I'll be sure to post some photos of our lovely stand next week, but here's me and Rachael's flowers.

Today, I was hanging out at the stand with Kevin Vaughn, the head of graduate ministries at CMF, and it's been really cool to talk to people about what our organisation is all about! And I've been meeting loads of cool people when I've visited their stands too! (And then I came back to York for a delicious roast beef dinner with my boys! Rice was slaving away in the kitchen for hours, I think--- and it was totally worth it!)

Otherwise, it's some studying whilst listening to these guys (it's like music from really hip fishermen--- my new favourites), Street Angels Training, and some church! wOo! And maybe attempting a new recipe or two.

What shall you be up to?

Never Let Me Go

I'm really eager to read the novel Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro--- it's meant to have a very rich text and a truly moving story... full of bioethical issues! I used to be a research assistant for one of the department chairs and read a lot on organ donation, so the Bioethicist in me particularly interested in the different issues which might arise from this! Has anyone read this novel? I might snoop around Oxfam for a copy!

What do you think?? Who wants to see it with me when it releases this winter?? ^_^

Beautiful wedding invitations to tying the knot!  (via ebb & flow)

These gorgeous photos make me wish I could visit Scotland this autumn!

And these stunning wedding photos in Morocco make we want to visit there too!

Great Question of the Day!

I know I sometimes freak folks out because I am attracted to weapons, but these are just too pretty!

Still in baby mode, and literally just melted into my shoes when I read this post from my old friend Liz Huff's blog about her little Molly!

Eco-friendly pen!

I don't know about you folks, but I have a pen habit. Like, being Asian means that I'm used to jelly pens and character pens and glitter pens... And now that I'm a bit more grown, I swoop in to acquire more and more pens like a pro--- especially at events like conferences and the Freshers Fayre! I've always wanted to kick it up a notch and take the step up to a fountain pen, but I'd be afraid to lose it!

This is probably only a FIFTH of the disposable pens I have on my desk--- and as you may [not] be able to see, I've gotten rid of the uneven mullet I was trying to rock. Now I just look like a little anime character. Lovely!

BUT then I watched this little vid and got to thinking that I need to start watching my habit and hope to switch over to these DBA pens!
